The Playwrights Union had occasional socials in the late 1980s. This one was at The Fare Exchange in Toronto, and L to R: Pat Langner, Alf Silver, Lawrence Jeffery and an unidentified bartender.

There used to be a small cubbyhole in the front office at the Tarragon. Maybe it's still there. I believe that in simpler times, it was used as the box office. In the mid-1990s we used it as the site for a short play, No Latecomers Admitted, which we performed at the Spring Arts Fair. The script has long since disappeared into an ether of dead computers and bad filing systems but, luckily, the actors survive: L to R: Esther Arbeid, Michael Waller and Jody Cummins.

The cast of the production of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Susan Girvan and I organized a reading of the Christmas classic, using the Judy Maddren version. We filled Metropolitan United and raised bucket-loads of dough for the Out of the Cold program there. It was an amazing event which, also to our amazement, went off without a hitch. Somewhere in America (well, Michigan, to be exact): From L to R: Mark Brownell, Scruffy Playwright, Joel Hechter. Mark and Joel were visiting a production of 'Orchidelirium' in Ann Arbor, directed by the brilliant Sue Miner. Mark is himself brilliant (playwright and producer) and Joel no less so - he would star in the Toronto premiere of 'Orchidelirium' and is now pursuing a career in a related branch of acting, law.

Marcia, being of upstanding moral character and aware of the general audience to whom she was reading, had just come to a word she hadn't expected... and decided to pronounce it 'public'.

The wonderful Allen Leatherman, a true gentleman, now passed. Allen made an unforgettably continental Raymond Loewy, in the Pittsburgh production of 'Writing with our Feet'.

A Pair of Playwrights

Eric Coates, the hugely popular artistic director, with actress Marion Day outside 'The Boot', the village's second most popular institution, after the theatre. Eric is completing his last season in Blyth, and will shortly take over the reins of Ottawa's Great Canadian Theatre Company.

CBC's legendary radio production venue, Studio 212, is being demolished. On Wednesday, December 12, 2012, the studio was opened to staff and a few visitors, who were able to take one last look at where so much radio brilliance had been created. Paul Gorbould was on hand to take pictures of the studio's close, and assembled this bunch of staffers, all with Studio 212 stories to tell. The closing of Studio 212

When he is not parading around the white cliffs of Dover, Randy Read is artistic director of New Stages Peterborough, a theatre that produces Canadian and international plays. Randy recently took a well-deserved holiday and is clearly enjoying himself at Beachy Head. Apparently a remarkable number of people travel to Beachy Head for less happy reasons, and soon after this picture was taken Randy was approached by a special Chaplain who was worried he was pondering a leap. Randy wasn't, the Chaplain was relieved, and now our favourite cliff dweller is safely back in Canada.
