Somewhere in America (well, Michigan, to be exact): From L to R: Mark Brownell, Scruffy Playwright, Joel Hechter. Mark and Joel were visiting a production of 'Orchidelirium' in Ann Arbor, directed by the brilliant Sue Miner. Mark is himself brilliant (playwright and producer) and Joel no less so - he would star in the Toronto premiere of 'Orchidelirium' and is now pursuing a career in a related branch of acting, law.

Back in the ancient mists of time - actually, not so long ago, a happy band of book-lovers assembled in Roxbury, New York and founded Friends of Freddy. This international fan-club of the novels of Walter R. Brooks has blossomed over the years to 500 members, and the 26-book Freddy series has been returned to print by Overlook Press, which has printed both gorgeous hard and softcover versions. Walter R. Brooks' widow Dorothy is holding the ceremonial pig. Michael Cart, who has written the definitive biography of Brooks ('Talking Animals and Others' - Overlook, pub) is the important gent in the middle. Playwright Dave is in the back row, looking both youthful and somewhat mystified that his innocent letter of inquiry should be setting off such an amazing chain of events.

I got real excited as I was walking about the German Village in Columbus, Ohio - and spotted this street sign. Our Canadian poetic treasure, Al Purdy, clearly had a following there and I snapped a bunch of pictures and remarked at the honour to a passing American. And then I walked a bit further down the street and saw an Cherry Al street and began to suspect that Al meant Alley, and we had a bit of evangelism still to do about one of our best poets...

Though it looks a bit like a frat house kitchen, this is actually part of the CBC Radio Drama studio, now gone. The cupboards all made different sounds upon opening and closing and the water from the taps made real water from the taps sounds. It was all pretty wonderful and now it's gone.

She may be a cow, but she's got more smarts than most politicians. Alas, her slogan was purloined by an unpopular Ontario premier, but Mrs Wiggins' common sense revolution began back in 1939, and was entirely fictional. For more information, google 'Friends of Freddy'.
