The time is the near future. In bleakest late autumn.
Three commuters are on their morning drive from exurbia to the city. Every day they pass a field, barren but for two men and a poor excuse for a tree. They comment. They speculate. And, one day, in a bust of generosity and hope, they reach out (sort of) to the men waiting in the field for them. They discover a whole new kind of nice feeling, even though it might not be shared by the recipients of their largesse.
